Building Our Vision Brick By Brick

Dallas Black Dance Theatre is one of the nation's leading modern dance companies; the organization strives to engage the diverse community through key initiatives such as professional dance performances, arts in education programs, community outreach activities, and dance training.

The historic Moorland YMCA served Dallas' black community from its initial construction in 1930 as the city's only YMCA for African Americans, to its present use as the permanent home of the internationally renowned Dallas Black Dance Theatre. North Dallas (which extended from Flora Street in the 1920s) was the height of black life and culture as much as it is the height of arts and culture today. The Moorland YMCA embodied the hopes and dreams of Dallas' black population and DBDT's vision is to share the African American heritage with a new, culturally diverse generation.

"Between these walls momentous decisions have been made. Historical meetings have been had which resulted in better understanding between the races." - Julia Scott Reed, Dallas Morning News, 1967

We thank all of our community supporters for preserving the past and helping write the new history for Dallas' Moorland YMCA building and DBDT's new home. We encourage you to visit the original Flora Street entrance or Ross Avenue Academy entrance to see your brick and its place in Dallas' history.
